The number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing . Our ability to detect them is growing . They are also being reported by the media faster and more widely covered .
Earthquakes of the magnitude of the Haiti and Chile earthquakes happen on average 2-3 times per year. It's just a coincidence that these two occurred closely . Disaster is more exciting news
It has been a fairly average year for earthquakes so far. People think there have been more than usual because the massive death toll and news coverage of the Haiti earthquake has sensitised them to news of earthquakes.
This latest one, although tragic, has only killed about 400 people (although I'm sure that figure will rise as more bodies are discovered). Compare that to the Sichuan earthquake of 2008 which killed 87,000, or the Tangshan quake of 1976 which killed about 250,000.
