It is reported by Rikitake , 1976 ( Internet ) that the ratio of P -wave velocity to S -wave velocity decreases before a major earthquake at about 10% and immediately returns to normal before and after earthquake. The diffusion of gases in contact of crack and subsequent crack surfaces to groundwater could explain the presence of radon gas in deep well informed before an earthquake . If hydrocarbons are present in the chamber created by the crack, the high pressures generated during a seismic event could potentially force these hot gases to the surface where the ignition occur.
