Reading the seismograph is a big issue . You should know the difference between various forms of seismic waves . The main waves are P waves and S waves generated from the point called focus. Wave L and R waves are surface waves generated in the earth's surface due to reflection and refraction . Richter Scale will not give a direct measure of the magnitude of the Richter scale. Although I have a good knowledge on earthquakes and tsunamis am not an expert on the decision of the Richter magnitude scale by studying the seismograph. But the idea behind the calculation is that you must find the distance from the epicenter to see the arrival time of the P wave and s wave . Approximately there will be a delay of 1 second for every 8 k / m away . When you feel an earthquake of magnitude 3 on the Richter scale at a distance of 100 k / m tremor is 0.1 mm . This will increase by ten times for each Richter scale . Get amplitude reduced by the inverse square of the distance from the epicenter. U.S. GS site provides free information on earthquakes. You can visit my site to get a better understanding of this topic. http://www.orkut.com/Community.aspx?cmm = ... < / A>

I'm not sure that there is any live seismic information on the web, but this would be a good place to start.
